A New Hope?

Echoing the post release title of the inaugural Star Wars film, Barack Obama was elected 44th President of the United States this morning, ushering in a new chapter in America’s manifest destiny together with a plea that the ideals of hope will and should supplant those of fear.

In an address designed to serve a global audience, the most telling subtext of the speech  for me was simply this: although America faces many threats and enemies abroad, perhaps its greatest foe is America itself. The rallying cry for the people of the United States to forget their selfish ways of the past and to unite behind a new era of collective and personal responsbility is the single unifying theme the Obama administration will bring to the US and the world, and it will one of the biggest yardsticks he will be measured on in four years time.

By all accounts, on the strength of the campaign over the last 18 months and on the goodwill and excitement of today’s events, he is off to a magnificent start.

Here are some of the more memorable images of this historic day from the New York Times:

How much has the world been looking forward to seeing the end of George W?

No one does POMP like the Americans!

OK – I’m going to say it – what is WITH the HAT?

He wants to hear the voices….

POTUS-elect Obama dispelling the key difference in communication style between himself and the Borg Queen. Reported today on his desire to keep his Blackberry in the White House:

“I want to be able to have voices, other than the drones people who are immediately working for me, be able to reach out and send me a message about what’s happening in America the Collective.”

Note – its all to do with currency of the information isnt it? I only drew this conclusion from having ‘fast forwarded’ segments of Voyager’s Unimatix Zero and Endgame over the weekend.

An epitaph for Gaza?

With all the carnage currently occuring in the Middle East, and all that is currently being written about it in blogs, op-ed and newspaper pieces around the world, Golda Meir’s words of approximately 40 years ago made me stop and think when I saw them quoted in a letter to the Australian yesterday;

“We will have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us”

Particularly prescient when the death toll in Gaza has effected a majority of childen and young people, the strip being one of the most densely populated areas on Earth.

Sanguine words from a respected Israeli (former) leader, or another example of deft, slight of hand Jewish propaganda?

You decide!
